Who are some good fashion designers in India?

India has seen some of the most creative and spectacular designers in the last few decades. Needless to say, each one of them has their own forte and brand name in the fashion industry, making them what they are today. Some of the top designers of India are:

  1. Anita Dongre

Known as the be-all-end-all of the Indian bridal designs and apparels, Anita Dongre believes in “wear ability, comfort, and inclusiveness” when it comes to designing clothes. Rajasthan, along with its cultural beauty and heritage, has been a huge source of inspiration for Dongre since she was a child visiting this state during her holidays. She also believes in supporting the villages in the country by providing the artisans of India a means of livelihood through outsourcing most of her design work to them.

Following are some bridal and other designer dresses from Anita Dongre’s website –

2. Manish Malhotra

Manish Malhotra is synonymous to effortless style and panache in the Indian fashion industry. Malhotra has styled apparels for some of the most popular actresses in the Indian film industry, like Sridevi, Aishwarya Rai, Shilpa Shetty, Kareena Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Urmila Matondkar, Manisha Koirala, Rani Mukherjee and Madhuri Dixit. He ventured into the mainstream fashion designing circle in 1988 with the introduction of his high-street store called Reverie – Manish Malhotra.

3. Tarun Tahiliani

Figuring out in the top fashion designers in India, Tarun Tahiliani is a name that doesn’t need much introduction. Known for bringing the first fashion boutique in India, Ensemble, Tahiliani also went up to establish his studio, Tarun Tahiliani Design Studio in New Delhi soon after that. Apparels designed by him are sold in in some of the most famous cities of the world, such as Tokyo, New York, London, and Mumbai, making him one of the top 10 designers of the nation.

4. Rohit Bal

Rohit Bal is known for his impeccable attention to detail, perfectly developed creativity and sense of aesthetics. His clientele list includes some of the most famous celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Anna Kournikova, Uma Thurman, Pamela Anderson, and many more. Rohit Bal’s fashion shows are held in some of the most fashionable cities of the world, like New York, Singapore, and Paris (along with India) are mostly sponsored by the Swatch Group, while he himself is the brand ambassador for Omega SA.

5. Ritu Kumar

Ritu Kumar is known for designing the wardrobes for the three winning beauty pageants, Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss Asia Pacific since a long time now. Ritu Kumar also launched her label called Label by Ritu Kumar, which is popular for catering to today’s woman, who is fiercely independent and a go-getter.

6. Ritu Beri

As the first Indian designer who presented a collection in Paris, Ritu Beri is known all over the country for her tasteful choice of colours and fabrics in her designs. Her designs are famous all over the country and have become a highlight on the international stage as well, with her shows being held in the USA, London and Paris.

Top Indian Fashion Designers

Indian designers are displaying much more novelty than before. The list of the most successful artists is not an easy one to make. Considering the current talent pool, it is probably at an all-time high. Until very recently, we had only a handful of them—we knew each of them by name. However, that’s not the case anymore. There are innumerable designers with incredible talent.

Recently, I went through a number of websites having a list of top Indian fashion designers and I found these two the most famous among them.

1. Anita Dongre

Unassuming girl next door from Jaipur, moving to Mumbai; starting life with two sewing machines in a bedroom to opening two stores in America, four labels under her name and dressing up the Duchess Of Cambridge. What are the odds? A dreamer and an achiever in the truest sense. She meticulously planned her labels to cater to the different needs of customers. Being a top Indian fashion designer believes one should wear brands and not the other way round. And that’s why her dresses are not consuming, over the top or loud. If you are a sucker for eclectic and elegant designs, she has that and a lot more for you.

2. Namrata Joshipura

When I first read about her and looked at her collection, I was taken aback by her take on contemporary designs. And that’s why it does not come across as too much of a surprise that she was named ‘Designer of the year’ by Elle magazine. She marries traditional and artisanal Indian themes skilfully to arrive at contemporary design silhouettes that stand out as work of art. She uses embellishments as an important technique to expose the colors. You have to check her collection to believe it. Spectacular and a feast for the eyes in a true sense.
